Where to Stay: Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands, still highly remote and just starting to become a popular destination for adventure travelers, may appear on the surface to only offer lodging in and around the capital of Tórshavn. But to stay in that region and only do day trips to the other islands within the Faroes would be doing yourself a huge disservice.

With a little more searching, one can easily find gorgeous seaside Airbnb cottages, mountain guesthouses, and all other manners of lodging in between. The following were where we stayed in the Faroe Islands; all three were absolutely stunning, and come highly recommended. I'm notoriously known for choosing Airbnb's over traditional hotels because of the unique lodging you get to experience with a nice taste of feeling at home. We jumped on this Cabin in Bøur, which is 15 minutes west of the airport, when we found out we would be starting and ending each day with views of Drangarnir (not to mention being right along the waterfront). We stocked up on groceries to save money and cooked breakfast every morning to get us energized for the multiple hikes that awaited us.

Our splurge accomodation during our trip was the one night we spent at Gjáargarður Guesthouse. We wanted a cozy Faroese experience and Gjáargarður offered optional home-cooked Faroese meals that you could add-on. Located on the northeast tip of the Eysturoy island inside the beautiful village of Gjógv, named after its famous 200 meter long sea-filled gorge, it's just one step from exploring the town and taking local hikes around the surrounding mountains.

If you prefer a more traditional lodging experience in the heart of a "larger" city, there are plenty of hotels in Tórshavn, the smallest capital in the world. We chose Hotel Tórshavn as it was located within walking distance to everything: (1) the historic district, (2) street parking, (3) Skansin (fortress), and (5) the ferry to Nolsoy. Our room also boasted views of Tórshavn Cathedral, Trappan, and the harbor.

For a guy who loves Airbnb's, this was surprisingly Jeremy's favorite place to stay. The beds were incredibly comfortable, the check-in was easy, and the location was prime for explorations.
